About the book (from the dust jacket)
Uncle Charlie wasn’t Chick’s real uncle, but he was just like part of the family-which is not to say he was run-of-the-mill. Charlie worked for Chick’s father until World War I, when Charlie went off to fight. When he came back, he made a fortune in land investment and married an ex-chorus girl named Sunday. Sunday was great, but it was Charlie’s black standard poodle, Hans Chick loved the most. With his corded coat, long tail, and sturdy build, Hans was, well-like no poodle you’d ever see today.

If Hans was a ham on occasion, in the field you might consider it thoroughness. He could retrieve a bird you shot at and missed, by diving into the brush and chasing it, sometimes for hours.

Whether in Newport, Rhode Island, at Charlie’s brownstone on Fifth Avenue, hunting pigeons on New York City rooftops, or at home in New Britain, Connecticut, Chick’s wacky adventures with Charlie, Sunday, and Hans make a warm and appealing remembrance of boyhood in the twenties.
