Edward Ardizzone Artist and Illustrator by Gabriel White: This is the first biography of Edward Ardizzone, one of the outstanding book illustrators of the twentieth century. His fine line drawings have been appearing in books since 1929, and during a long career (he died in 1979), he illustrated nearly one hundred books. The scope of his achievement can be seen in his work on such books as The Pilgrim’s Progress, The Charles Dickens Birthday Book, Don Quixote, and Peter Pan. An honored writer and illustrator of children’s books as well, his children’s book career began in 1936 with Little Tim and the Brave Sea Сaptain. Ardizzone was a warded the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1956, Edward Ardizzone, with nearly three hundred reproductions of the artist’s work in color and black-and-white, is an invaluable record of the life work of one of the twentieth century’s most important artists and illustrators.

About the author: (from the dust jacket)
Gabriel White was born in Rome and spent his early childhood in French Switzerland He was educated at Downside School and Trinity College Oxford. He studied drawing at the Westminster School of Art under Bernard Meninsky, where he met Edward Ardizzone, a fellow student, and married his sister, Betty, in 1928. In 1945 he was appointed Assistant Art Director at the Arts Council and in 1958 succeeded Philip James as Director of Art. He was a warded the CBE in 1963. In 1964 he directed “The Romantic Age” exhibition at the Tate Gallery and in 1972 he directed “The Age of Neoclassicism’ exhibition which was shown at the Royal Academy and the Victoria and Albert Museum, He has written articles and reviews on numerous artistic subjects and continues to paint and draw in his spare time. His wife died in 1958, and he married Jane Kent Kingdom in 1963, He has three sons and one daughter.
