About the book (from the dust jacket)
ROOKIE RUNNING BACK is a fast-action story about Mike Scott, a Yale football player who turns pro for the Steeltown Tigers. In a few short weeks, during the rigors of the training camp, Mike learns how different the pro game is from Ivy League football, He finds, too, that his value to the team is being measured by footage of press clippings rother thon footage on the field, and that the thirst for power can make losing more important than winning.

He also finds a warm friend in Tippy Raft, a Negro fellow player. Together they prove the villainy of the coach, who wants to throw a game to the opposition. But in the climax, when Mike returns to the Yale Bowl to play an exhibition game against the New York Giants, he finds that team spirit does prevail over chicanery and greed.

ROOKIE RUNNING BACK is a different kind of football story, tersely written, filled with the kick and power of the profession.
