No Dust Jacket as issued. The Good+ binding is staple-bound, illustrated paper over boards with a paper spine, the front cover shows a steam shovel, a boy operating it with red, blue and black lettering, the rear cover has advertising for The Little Golden Library, .7″ chip on the front cover hinge, rear cover has sticker residue, light corner-wear, light wear at the head and foot of the spine, small stain on the last page which does not effect the text or illustration. The binding is tight and the pages are clean. The lovely color illustrations by Cornelius DeWitt can be found on every page. The book measures 6.7″ wide x 8.0″ tall.

HELEN PALMER has written many children’s books and magazine stories under the varying names of Marion Palmer, Helen Palmer, and Helen Geisel. She attended Oxford University, where she met and married Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss), who wrote To THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET. They live in California and make frequent trips to New York. Helen Palmer prepared the stories in the Giant Golden Book Walt Disney’s UNCLE REMUS STORIEs, and the Little Golden Books WALT Disney’s UNCLE REMUS, TOMMY’s WONDERFUL RIDES, and BOBBY AND HIS AIRPLANWS.

Cornelius DeWitt has studied art in his native Germany, in Italy, and in France. Since coming to the United States in 1928, he-has done advertising art, murals, and children’s book illustration. His books include THE GOLDEN ENCYCLOPEDIA (for which he made more than 2,000 paintings), THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and WHAT AM I?, both Little Golden Books, and the Regions of America series.

The Little Golden Books were printed in September 1942 and for sale in stores in October. One and a half million books were sold in just five months. With an initial series of twelve titles each having a print run of 50,000 copies, the first Little Golden Books were priced at a very affordable 25 cents each. Little Golden Books started with publishing firm Simon & Schuster; Western Printing and Lithographing Company in Racine, Wisconsin was Simon & Schuster’s partner in the Little Golden Books venture, with Western handling print operations.
