About the book: (from the dust jacket)
COUPLES, John Updike’s fifth novel concerns the interactions of ten couples in an out-of-the-way New England community called Tarbox. The circle of acquaintance is felt as a magic circle, with ritual games, religious substitutions, a priest (Freddy Thorne). and a scapegoat (Pier Hanema). The action runs from the spring of 1963 through the following spring.
