Samuel E. Lowe (12 Feb 1884 – 6 Feb 1952), former president of the Whitman Publishing Co. and associate of the Western Printing & Lithographing Co. He came to Racine WI in 1915 and worked there at that time with the Central Association. He had been associated with boys’ work in New York. He joined Western Printing & Lithographing Co. in 1916, and later was president of the Whitman Publishing Co., the book division of Western Printing. He was president of Whitman Publishing when he left to form his own publishing business, Lowe, Inc. in Kenosha in 1940. When the New York Times wanted information about best selling children’s books, it was logical to seek out Samuel E Lowe, for he was the recognized dean of the children’s book business. Upon his death in 1952 his wife took over the company. Edith K. Lowe (16 Aug 1905 – 25 Feb 2000), in 1937 she was already widely known as a talented writer and editor of children’s books. Her stories under the pseudonym “Mary Windsor” delighted countless parents and children. Her training, her strength of character, her indomitable will enabled her not only to successfully bring up a family of five enthusiastic boys but at the same time to perform the responsibilities of president of one of the nation’s leading publisher of books for children, the Samuel E. Lowe Company in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Warm, friendly, gracious and tactful with a mind of her own, her business associates respected her keen ability. The daughter of a farming family, Edith Lowe received her formal schooling at Teachers’ College and the University of Wisconsin.
