About the book (from the dust jacket)
This familiar poem is an integral, beloved part of every child’s Christmas. But the pictorial interpretation brought to it by Caldecott Honor Book artist Anita Lobel is something we have not seen before. Though Clement C. Moore wrote the poem in New York City, most artists place it in an idyllic country setting. Now Anita Lobel returns to the city and brings to her illustrations the warmth and the poem glowing detail that reflect her own affection for her city as it looked and felt in the late nineteenth century. With rows of rooftops and chimneys, the ornate interior of a peacefully sleeping house, and a miniature St. Nick coursing through the nighttime sky over a majestic bridge and a silent city, she has created a haunting Victorian vision of the Christmas classic-a visual treat that children everywhere will treasure.
