About the book: (from the dust jacket)
Beatrix Potter, creator of one of the most loved children’s stories of all time, was herself an unhappy child. Botn in Victorian England to strict parents, Potter lived for her family’s summer vacations to Scotland, where she carefully observed and drew animals and nature. At home in London she was shy and lonely, her only companions her many pets. But she continued to draw and paint, always striving to make her subjects look real. It was while writing letters to a friend’s ill son that Potter first began telling and illustrating the exploits of her pet rabbit, Peter. The worldwide popularity of The Tale of Peter Rabbit testifies to how sincerely Potter identified with children as her equals. By holding so much of her private, creative child- hood into her adulthood, Potter forever raised the standards of both the writing and illustration of children’s literature. Her talent and energy came from her heart.
