About the book (from the dust jacket)
From his perch in a twisted cypress tree, Peppe looks down on the fishing fleet in the beautiful harbor of Monterey. How he wishes for a boat of his own. The story tells how Peppe’s father, a Sicilian-American fisherman, goes out with the boats and is almost lost at sea, Peppe’s faith that he will return. Together he and his father prepare for the festival of the Blessing of the Boats, in which the whole family takes part. Through his old fisherman friend, Geramia, Peppe finally gets his wish. As in all Leo Politi’s picture books, there is true understanding of children and a warm feeling of family life. The setting of this book, the old California capital of Monterey. is particularly charming.
