About the book (from the dust jacket)
Children will be entranced by Little Bear’s trip to the moon, his birthday party, and his wishes and adventures. A child with first-grade reading skill will be able to read the book with a minimum of help. Even halfway through the first grade, he will be able to read the beginning chapters practically unaided.
“This is what we have all been waiting for! Teachers and elementary school librarians have long been seeking a creative story for beginning readers, a story that would reveal the magic and the fun of reading. LITTLE BEAR is magic-useful, delightfully funny, and very welcome magic.”- Ruth Ersted, State Supervisor of School Libraries, Minnesota
“This enchanting LITTLE BEAR meets the ever present need a book that the beginning reader can enjoy by himself. Such delights on the printed page will surely do a remarkably good job of motivating a child’s learning to read. Its absence of any note of talking down will also give it value for use with readers in grades beyond the first and second.” -Mary Lee Keath, Director, Department of Library Service, Denver Public Schools.
“A find, of proved success with the child who has first-grade reading skill. The story of Little Bear’s imaginative play feels far removed from controlled vocabulary; Maurice Sendak’s drawings give it special distinction.”–Virginia Haviland, Readers Advisor for Children, Boston Public Library.
