About the book (from the dust jacket)

They had noticed him until he was there, before them, standing so his shadow seemed to cross Yancy’s face. Both sat up straight. He was a short man, with a thick gray beard, little glasses that rested almost invisibly on his nose, and a shapeless brown hat. His baggy coat was much too large. Meg was instantly defensive. “Who’re you?”

“My name is… but never mind, most folks don’t call me anything but Jack.”

That’s how runaway orphans Meg and Yancy met the strange old derelict called Mr. Jack. Experienced as the two youngsters were at evading the authorities, Mr. Jack was better. They teamed up with him, and almost immediately he found them a place to stay that nobody else knew about. From then on he seemed to reappear whenever they particularly needed help or advice. Meg and Yancy did very well on their own, keeping themselves alive with odd jobs, but once in a while the adult world would threaten them anew with being sent back to the orphanage, and that’s when Mr. Jack would pop up again. Readers young and old will enjoy the lighthearted adventures of these two canny scamps and the even cannier old man who befriends them.
