Anna and James have been invited to stay at Daybrook with their Great-aunt and Great-uncle for the summer holidays. But as soon as they arrive they sense that something is troubling the Greats.
The fields around the Canal House have not been ploughed; there are no cattle in the meadows: and there is talk of Great-uncle going to work in the Daybrook factory.
Gradually James and Anna learn that the Greats have very little money and that their savings have almost gone. What is more, they may have to sell their beloved Cana/ House.
