About the book (from the dust jacket)
Christmastime is a tough time to be poor. But Emmet Otter and his widowed mother don’t like to complain, for they’ve managed to get by -what with Mrs. Otter taking in washing and Emmet doing odd jobs.

This year, though, the mill hasn`t been busy; many animals are out of work and doing their washing and odd jobs. So it’s been harder than ever for Emmet and his mother own to make ends meet. In spite of this, each is secretly determined to give the other something special for Christmas, And when a local talent show is announced, it seems like the perfect solution. But Emmet doesn`t tell his mother he`s going to try for the cash prize of fifty dollars. How could he tell her when, in order to enter, he has to cut a hole in her only washtub and use it as a washtub bass. Nor is he aware that Mrs. Otter is making some plans of her own ..With echoes of a classic O’Henry plot, the Hobans have woven a tender and sentimental tale that says- once again -love is the greatest gift of all.
